In 1999 when the US women’s national soccer team won the Women’s World Cup, they scrimmaged, earlier in the year, the US national Boys under 15 B-team. Twice. And Lost both times 5–0. I know many men in their 30s and 40s who play some serious “pick-up” basketball during the week (evenings after work). Many of these guys could Not make their college’s varsity team or were a perpetual bench sitter. When a 25-something woman who Started for a good NCAA D-1 women’s team plays with them, she has no chance and can’t keep up. I play ice hockey with a group of over-50 ice hockey players, and most of them (not me) played college D-1 hockey, one was with the 1976 Olympic team and several played pro hockey in Europe after college. But now they are over 50. During Christmas they invite some current college players to scrimmage with us. When sheep do need to be watched is during lambing season. They’re more vulnerable then. Lambs need to be looked after. But lambing season isn’t in December. It’s around Easter time.

In reality, Christmas is almost completely a It’s not a phase it’s my life it’s not my duty it’s my hone it’s not for everyone it’s for us veteran t shirt holiday now. It happens no matter what you do to mark or not mark it. Merry Christmas isn’t really much different from saying “Have a nice summer” or whatever. We lived in Qatar for many years It is quite a conservative Muslim country. We were having a a bunch of people in for Christmas dinner and decided it would be nice to get a big Christmas centerpiece for the dining room table, so we ordered one from a florist. It wasn’t cheap because the evergreens, etc. had to be flown in from Europe. When we went to pick it up, our arrangement looked puny next to all the other huge ones in the shop. We remarked on that to the florist and he said “Oh, those are for Qataris! They go crazy for Christmas!” And he was right. The big malls were full of Santa Clause, Reindeer, snowmen, Holly, etc. We could just have easily been in Minneapolis— except no manger scenes, although those wouldn’t really have been out of place as the Quran recognises Jesus Christ as a prophet— just not the Son of God.
